Person Brushing Teeth | Natural Toothpaste Recipe

If you're looking for a natural toothpaste recipe, I've collected nine here. These homemade toothpaste recipes range from a simple coconut oil, baking soda, and essential oil blend to more involved ways to make toothpastes that claim to help remineralize tooth enamel. You can also make mouthwash.

1. Simple Baking Soda Toothpaste Recipe

Blend 1 tablespoon melted coconut oil and 1 tablespoon baking soda in a small glass jar with 1 drop peppermint and 1 drop tea tree. Let set. To use, dab a little of the mixture on your toothbrush.

2. Easy Homemade Toothpaste

Bentonite clay purportedly has healing properties that kill bacteria. The stevia is for sweetness and is optional but probably needed if you want kids to use the toothpaste.

  • 4 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 4 tablespoons bentonite clay
  • 1/2 teaspoon real sea salt
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons filtered water
  • 10 to 15 drops peppermint essential oil (or cinnamon or spearmint)
  • Few drops of liquid stevia (optional)
  1. Mix coconut oil, clay, and salt in a small bowl.
  2. Add one tablespoon of water and cream the ingredients together, adding more water (and a few drops of liquid stevia, if desired) until you like the consistency.
  3. Mix in the essential oil.
  4. Store in an airtight glass container.

4. All Natural Toothpaste Recipe

Calcium carbonate powder is an abrasive. Xylitol adds sweetness, and some sources state it may help prevent tooth decay, but that hasn't been scientifically proven.

  • 3 tablespoons calcium carbonate powder (not in citrate form, which will erode enamel)
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons powdered xylitol
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • 3 to 5 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 30 or more drops peppermint essential oil, to taste
  • 10 drops liquid trace minerals
  1. Combine calcium carbonate powder, xylitol, and baking soda, mixing thoroughly.
  2. Soften the coconut oil in a small container with the heat from your palms.
  3. Mix 3 tablespoons of the softened coconut oil into the combined powders. To achieve desired texture, add more coconut oil a little at a time. (The mixture will become firm as it sits and the peppermint oil and trace minerals will soften the mixture.)
  4. Mix in the peppermint essential oil and trace minerals.
  5. Transfer to a sealable glass container.
