Using essential oils for sinus congestion relief can help you feel better when your have a cold, flu, or allergies. When nasal and adjacent tissues and blood vessels swell, they produce congestion (also called catarrh or a stuffy nose) that may or may not include a nasal discharge or "runny nose."
The best essential oils for congestion include cypress, eucalyptus, peppermint, pine, and tea tree. However, an essential oil blend is more likely to bring symptom relief and may promote faster healing.
This article includes blends you can use for steam inhalation, diffusers and inhalers, chest rubs, and bath and massage.
When making an essential oil recipe for congestion, always keep in mind your personal needs, and adjust the amount of essential oil used as necessary.
A common way to use essential oils for sinus congestion is steam inhalation. It also has the benefit of adding moisture to dry nasal passages.
To do a steam, use a bowl of steaming (not boiling) water. Close your eyes and lean over the bowl to breathe in the steam. You can drape a towel over your head and create a tent to keep the steam inside. Make sure the water is NOT so hot that it burns.
